Joint discussion forum signup

For HLS students registered in Zittrain's Fall 99 Internet and Society Seminar:

We have opened a joint discussion forum for HLS students enrolled in Internet and Society and MIT students enrolled in Ethics and Law on the Electronic Frontier. Participation in the forum is restricted to members of the two classes.

The forum software permits you to post messages and respond to other postings. You can also activate an email alert, which will send you new postings by email.

The forum offers two different interface styles -- one is traditional usenet threads, and one is a more tailored "question and answer" style. You can use whichever you like, and switch back and forth between them as you choose.

To join the forum, you have to do three steps (in order):

  1. The software runs as part of a general community system that supports interaction around a variety of topics. Your first step is to enroll as a member of the community.
  2. You then enroll in the access group that is set up for the Harvard class.
  3. Finally, you join the discussion forum itself.

Here is how to do this, in detail:

  1. Visit the Web page http://photo.net/ug and click on the link for the class Fall 1999 Internet and Society. You should get a request to log in and register as a member of the community system. Log in with your email address and fill out the information. You'll see that the system has created a personal workspace for you, which you can play around with later.

  2. Revisit the page at http://photo.net/ug and once again click on the the link for the class Fall 1999 Internet and Society. This time, you should get a confirmation page that asks you to sign up for membership in the group. Click on the link marked "sign up".

  3. Now you should be able to enter the discussion forum by using one of the following two links:
Feel free to bookmark one or both of these pages. Note that you will be offered the option of adding an email alert, if you want to follow the forum by email.
